Israel-Gaza violence: Dozens killed in Israeli strike on camp housing displaced Palestinians

At least 45 people, including many children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a makeshift tent camp for displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip late on Sunday, according to Palestinian officials.

The Israeli military said it was reviewing the incident, but did not immediately confirm the strike.

The Wafa news agency, quoting the Palestine Red Crescent Society, said that many of those who died were burned alive inside their tents. The agency said that dozens more were injured, some of them critically.

The strike came as tensions between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, have been rising in recent weeks. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli aircraft carried out a series of airstrikes on targets in Gaza, and Hamas fired rockets into Israel.

The airstrike on the tent camp was the deadliest single incident in the current round of violence. It brought the total number of Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes since the beginning of the month to at least 90, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the incident. In a statement, the military said that it was "aware of reports of civilian casualties" and that it was "reviewing the incident."

The strike on the tent camp has drawn international condemnation. The United Nations has called for an independent investigation into the incident, and the European Union has expressed its "deep concern" over the rising violence in Gaza.
